Good Jobs and a Strong Equitable Economy
Allegheny County has all of the ingredients for a roaring economy and good jobs for all of our residents, yet we have been amongst the slowest metro areas to recover economically from the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, jobs in the service and care sectors are growing at the fastest rate despite being the positions with some of the lowest wages and fewest worker protections. Sara’s plan for the economy and jobs will rebuild our communities with new jobs in growing industries, help struggling small businesses on our main streets, protect workers and raise labor standards with a particular focus on the service and care industries, and position Allegheny County as a leader in clean manufacturing.
➜ Implement Sara’s Made Clean in America Manufacturing Jobs plan to leverage our unique strengths and create good union and attract the hundreds of ready-to-grow sustainable technology and clean energy businesses that applied to the Department of Energy for support in the last two months alone
➜ Create a County-Ready Jobs Plan to help the next generation build job skills while serving their community
➜ Form a Workers’ Rights and Wages Enforcement Office to crack down on anti-worker labor practices, address gender and race-based wage gaps, and enforce prevailing wage standards
➜ Make large corporations and large nonprofits pay their fair share to keep property taxes affordable for working families; ͓
➜ Increase investment in the staff, facilities, and programming of the Community College of Allegheny County, technical schools, and successful training and apprenticeship programs to expand access to growing industries
➜ Create a county-wide taskforce to support the creation of and transition to employee-owned businesses that keep jobs in our communities and build collective wealth.
